Suriya has won three Tamil Nadu State Film Awards and three Filmfare Awards South. He was listed 33 in Forbes India's "Celebrity100 List" for the year 2013.
Suriya established an NGO named "Agaram Foundation" has supported the higher education of more than 1000 deserving economically backward students(first time graduates in their family) who have now got placements and now they hv turned volunteers helping new set of students coming in.
He attended Padma Seshadri Bala Bhavan School and St. Bede's Anglo Indian Higher Secondary School in Chennai and graduated from Loyola College with a Bachelor of Commerce degree.
Suriya debuted in 1997 film Nerukku Ner directed by Vasanth and produced by Mani Ratnam, who gave him the name "Suriya". Before his debute he had worked at a garment factory for 6 months. Nerrukku Ner was a block buster movie but all his succeeding films did not do well, his first solo hit was Nandha(2001) for which he won his first Filmfare award for Best Actor.

Before being an actor Suriya was employed in a garment's factory where he used to earn Rs 8,000 a month and he had to travel 60 to 70 Kms daily on his bike.
When Suriya was a child he had inferiority complex. He was not good at speaking, studies and sports.
